A 20-year-old Canyon Country man was arrested Friday after allegedly leading police on a short pursuit in a stolen car in Sand Canyon, according to sheriff’s officials.

The man, identified as Carlos Caceres, has been booked on charges of taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, receiving known stolen property and reckless evasion, according to Sgt. Brian Allen with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Around 12:15 p.m. Friday, deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station spotted a 2004 Honda near Sand Canyon Road that had been reported stolen the night before, according to Lt. Mark Hershey.

When deputies turned on their sirens to pull over the car, Caceres allegedly fled from deputies on Sand Canyon Road.

The car accelerating to high speeds and driving erratically, deputies canceled their vehicle pursuit out of concern for safety, Hershey said.

But the car halted shortly afterward in the middle of Sand Canyon Road with two flat tires. The driver ditched the Honda near Valley Ranch Road to flee on foot, reportedly hopping fences and running through yards in the area.

“We had concerned citizens coming out and pointing where he had run,” Hershey said.

Hershey said deputies caught up to the man near a pool in a backyard but the suspect refused to stop when ordered to. The suspect fled again, but was stopped by deputies a short time later, according to Hershey.

“He was a good runner, but not a great one,” Hershey said.

Caceres was detained by deputies about 12:30 p.m. on Valley Ranch Road.
