A bicyclist is in the hospital with a broken back after he was hit by a motorist who fled the scene of the collision today, but then turned himself in four hours later, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The victim, described as being in his 50s, remains in Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Santa Clarita with a broken back and numerous lacerations and abrasions, said CHP Officer Jason Peavy.

About 6:30 a.m. Monday, CHP officers received reports of a car colliding with a bicyclist on Sierra Highway north of Vasquez Canyon Road in Canyon Country, Peavy said.

Responding officers found a cyclist had been hit by a motorist who failed to stay at the collision scene, he said.

At 10 a.m. they received a call from deputies at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station reporting that a man called saying he was the motorist of the vehicle that struck the bicyclist, Peavy said.

Family members helped convince the motorist to “do the right thing” and turn himself in, he said.

The man, whose name was not released, was arrested and charged with hit and run causing serious injury and held in custody at the local sheriff’s station jail.

Detectives remained at the crash scene for most of the day Monday gathering evidence, Peavy said.
