Valencia’s AMS Fulfillment helps employees, community

Valencia's AMS Fulfillment recently presented a $625 check to the Domestic Violence Center of SCV, a donation that came out of their company owners' desires to help their employees and the community.

"We were trying to look for something we could do for both our employees and the community in these tough times," said Ken Wiseman, CEO of AMS Fulfillment. "We thought about this clothing exchange as something that could be a win-win situation all the way around."

AMS Fulfillment, which manages the receiving, storage and distribution of products mostly to retail, employs about 85 workers, some of whom hold "almost minimum-wage-type positions," Wiseman said.

"It doesn't take huge things sometimes to help out in an economic crisis," Wiseman said. "Sometimes, it just takes a lot of folks doing little things."

The company hosted an in-house clothing exchange after employees brought in used-but-nice clothing items that their co-workers could purchase for a few dollars during breaks.

"Gosh, I saw a leather jacket that was almost brand new going for four or five dollars," Wiseman said.

Ana Leyba, a San Fernando Valley resident, walked away with a couple of items for herself and her son.

"I think it was a great thing that the company allowed us to do, with the hard times we have right now," Leyba said. "Aside from it being rewarding, we were able to take a couple (of) nice things home at a very low price."

The company presented the $625 check from the clothing-exchange proceeds to the Domestic Violence Center in mid-February. Leftover clothing was distributed to the center and the Salvation Army.

As for AMS, Wiseman said the seven-year-old firm is doing well despite the economic times.

"We allow companies to focus on the non-brick-and-mortar part of their business - developing products and marketing them," he said. "So essentially we become all our clients' warehouse."

More and more retailers wanting to save space and money are calling the company to assess the value of outsourcing their warehousing, which comes down to saved space and labor, Wiseman said.
