Man arrested in Canyon Country hit-and-run crash involving bicyclist

A Newhall man who turned himself in four hours after his apparent involvement in a crash with a bicyclists has been charged with felony hit and run causing injury.

The man, who lives on Walnut Street and works busing tables, was arrested shortly before noon Monday after he showed up at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, according to the booking log of arrests maintained by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

A California Highway Patrol officer said Monday that the man who turned himself in at the station was the driver of the vehicle that struck a bicyclist earlier that day.

The collision occurred about 6:30 a.m. Monday on Sierra Highway north of Vasquez Canyon Road in Canyon Country.

The victim, described as being in his 50s, was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital with a broken back and numerous lacerations and abrasions.

His condition remains unchanged since Monday, an investigating CHP officer said Wednesday.

Charged with felony hit and run causing injury is 29-year-old Artemio Hernandezreyes. He remains in custody on $50,000 bail.
