College of the Canyons warns of door-to-door scam

Officials at College of the Canyons warned today about a door-to-door scam in which people posing as students are going door to door trying to solicit money for projects or activities.

The problem presents itself occasionally, college spokesman Bruce Battle said. The most recent version of the scheme has individuals soliciting money for a college newspaper, he said.

COC has no college newspaper.

“Variations of this same scam happen from time to time, with people who have posed as students and asked for money for various college projects or activities — none of which are real,” Battle wrote in an email.

COC never asks students to go door to door to ask for donations for any reason, according to Battle. Rather, anyone masquerading as a student or representative for COC is likely trying to take advantage of the college’s reputation to convince people of the con.

“And, needless to say, the college doesn’t appreciate having its good reputation sullied in this manner,” Battle wrote.

Battle said anybody who comes into contact with the solicitors should ask for identification or get a good description of those asking for money and report them to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The Sheriff’s Station can be reached at 661-255-1121.
