LOS ANGELES (AP) — Reports given to Los Angeles County board supervisors show use of force on jail inmates has increased during the first half of this year.

The Los Angeles Times says a report from special counsel Merrick Bob found the number of incidents rose nearly 29 percent up until July 6 this year compared with the same period in 2012.

Terri McDonald, assistant sheriff for the custody division, said there had been 322 incidents this year, with the majority being low-level uses of force that do not cause injury or prompt the filing of a grievance by the inmate.

The reporting is part of an effort to reduce violence in the nation's largest jail system, which is being investigated by the federal government.
