An Acton man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to one count of murder for allegedly shooting another man during a quarrel in May, a Los Angeles County District Attorney’s spokeswoman said.

Scott Russell Shipley, 56, entered his plea Wednesday in Antelope Valley Superior Court to a single charge of murder in the shooting of 39-year-old Christopher Lawrence Demyen, also of Acton, said spokeswoman Shiara Dávila-Morales.

Shipley is now scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing early next month, she said.

Prosecutors say Shipley shot and killed Demyen in Acton on May 15.

Demyen was shot in the torso and pronounced dead that afternoon after the two men got into a verbal argument that turned into a physical altercation, according to a sheriff’s sergeant.

Shipley remains in custody at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles with bail set at $2 million.
