COC eyes $18M for projects

College of the Canyons trustees Wednesday will consider transferring $18.1 million from Measure M funds to continue construction projects on the Valencia and Canyon Country campuses until state funding arrives.

The money would be used for projects like the University Center, an expansion of Mentry Hall and the Applied Technology infrastructure.

"What we're really concerned with is the construction that's under way," said Sue Bozman, college spokeswoman.

Local voters passed the $160 million Measure M bond in 2006.

Any Measure M money the college uses for construction would be repaid once state reimbursements are received in 2009-10.

Future projects like the expansion of the community college's library will most likely be delayed as design plans are pending state approval, Bozman said.

"Those projects haven't come out of design, we haven't bid on them," Bozman said. "That delay is not hurting us."
