Just about every player on the Golden Valley freshman team will be seeing time on the field this season as the roster currently names just 27 kids.

Despite having a lack of depth, head coach Steve Lombardi does see a benefit in a small team, as every player will get plenty of game experience.

“Every kid on the roster is going to get playing time. They are going to have to step up and play a role on our team,” Lombardi said.

Leading the offense for the Grizzles will be Johnny Fuentes. According to Lombardi, Fuentes is the team’s most versatile offensive player, as he will be playing slot receiver, as well as splitting quarterback duties with Josh Valano.

The coaches won’t be putting too much pressure on the quarterbacks, as the team will employ a run-first attack.

“We are going to be an offense that tries to run between the tackles,” Lombardi said.

Tyson Green will be getting the bulk of the inside handoffs, while Kingsley Maduike is more of an outside running threat.

Rounding out the skill positions, Alex Escamilla and Devin Lewis will be joining Fuentes as the starting wide receivers.

The offensive line is still the position with the most questions for the Grizzles. Lombardi only named one definite starter, Michael Hawley, at the position.

On defense, Golden Valley will be led by its linebackers. Hawley will have two-way responsibilities as the Grizzles’ top linebacker.

“He can fly to the football and he’s making a lot of solo tackles,” Lombardi said.

Also playing linebacker will be Maduike, Jacob Fisher, Tai Brown and D.J. McIntyre.

In the secondary, Green will be a leader from the safety position along with cornerback Levelle Calvin.

The defensive anchor will be nose tackle Josh Aram, who Lombardi says is easily the biggest player on the team.

The Grizzles open their season at Granada Hills on Aug. 29.
