Write an essay for publication on the Vietnam War

Veterans’ organization sponsoring contest as part of traveling wall visit

Santa Clarita Valley fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders are invited to write essays about the historic importance of the Vietnam War as part of the visit of the Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall to the Santa Clarita Valley next month.

The wall, an 80 percent replica of the memorial in Washington, D.C., will be at Westfield Valencia Town Center Sept. 26-29. As part of the historic visit, the Friendly Valley Veterans Club is sponsoring an essay contest asking the question “Why was the Vietnam War important to America?”

Submissions from Santa Clarita Valley classrooms or individual students, as well as from home-schooled or private-school students, may be sent via email to to be considered for publication.

In addition, the winning entries in the contest will be published in The Signal after the judging. Entries are accepted through Sept. 9 at any local public library or via email to The Signal.

Students must be fourth-, fifth- or sixth-graders and live in the Santa Clarita Valley. Students’ names and grade levels and their schools or other educational programs must be included. Addresses must also be included but will not be published.

Students may submit their entries electronically to The Signal at by way of a Word document.

Essays may also be submitted single-sided, double-spaced and typed on 8 1/2-by-11 inch paper at any public libraries in Santa Clarita, Stevenson Ranch, Castaic or Acton/Agua Dulce.

Winners will be selected by mid-September, and their essays will be published in The Signal.

All essays become the property of the Friendly Valley Veterans Club and will not be returned.

Submissions must be 500-700 words long.
