CALABASAS — In the first half, the Saugus Centurion football team looked like the inexperienced group from 2012.

In the second half, it looked like the team poised to take a giant step forward in 2013.

Behind Reid Rupe’s 291 rushing yards, Saugus rattled off 36 unanswered points to defeat the Calabasas Coyotes 51-14 Friday at Keith Ritchie Field at Calabasas High in the season opener.

Following a touchdown run by Calabasas running back Anthony Wright to cut the deficit 15-14 late in the second quarter, the Centurions (1-0) turned up the intensity offensively and defensively to rout the Coyotes (0-1) through the remainder of the game.

“It’s been 11 months since our last game, so we needed to settle down,” said Saugus head coach Jason Bornn on the message to his team at halftime. “With 30 returning seniors, we had a lot of anxiousness. We needed to settle down and do what we’ve been coached to do.”

Running backs are coached to have a nose for the end zone, which is exactly what Rupe displayed Friday night.

The senior had 20 carries and finished with three touchdowns.

He showed the ability to break the big one as his touchdowns came from 54, 12 and 88 yards.

With 5:18 to play in the first, his 54-yard scamper gave the Centurions an early 12-0 lead, while his final 88-yard touchdown came on the last play of third quarter to make the score 41-10 and put the contest well out of reach.

“He has worked tremendously hard the whole year, from the first day after the last game (of 2012),” Bornn said. “It’s an example of how hard work can turn into a great opportunity.”

The victory marks the second consecutive year Saugus has opened up its season with a win over Calabasas, as it won 18-15 at home in 2012.
