West Ranch High School has named Sean O’Brien as its new head football coach for the 2009 season.

The decision was announced Tuesday evening at a football boosters meeting. Principal Bob Vincent chose O’Brien after a long interview process.

O’Brien has served as the JV football coach at West Ranch since coming to the Wildcats from Hart, where he held the same position. He currently serves as an English teacher at West Ranch High School.

Under former head coach Mike Kane, West Ranch finished 2-8 last season after going 4-6 in 2007. Kane resigned on Dec. 18, citing his desire to spend more time with his family.

Kane was the first football coach in school history, and he compiled a 13-17 overall record in three seasons, including a 2-8 mark in the Foothill League, with both wins coming over Golden Valley.

The Wildcats were 7-3 in his first season in 2006 and gradually scheduled tougher competition over Kane’s tenure, including a home game against Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks last fall.

The Signal will follow up on this story in Thursday’s edition.
