Shield HealthCare in Santa Clarita announced its 13th annual story contest “What Makes Caregiving Rewarding?”

The contest is a positive way to recognize and reward the caregiver’s role, the company said in a news release.

The story contest honors the challenges of both family caregivers and health care professionals.

Caregivers devote themselves to the labor of love in order to meet the daily health and emotional needs of the person in their care, the Valencia-based company said.

Last year’s grand prize winners included two mothers of special-needs children and a daughter caring for her elderly mother with Alzheimer’s.

One care-giving winner wrote about tending to her daughter with Angelman Syndrome, a complex genetic disorder that primarily affects the nervous system.

“Chloe has shown me what is important to focus on in life; not to sweat the small stuff and to enjoy each moment for what it is. This is the privilege of being a caregiver,” the winner wrote.

Valencia-based Shield Healthcare started as a special pharmacy in Van Nuys in 1957.

Since then, it moved its corporate office into a larger building in Valencia and focuses on supplying disposable equipment, such as diapers, catheters and bandages, said Roger Miller, chief marketing officer, in an interview with The Signal last year.

Today the company sells — and tracks the regulations for — more than 2,500 items. It has 11 offices in California, Illinois, Texas, Colorado and Washington State.

Valencia is the largest of Shield’s three distribution centers, sending out some 40,000 orders a month to individual patients and their caregivers. The majority of the company’s workforce operates out of the company’s Santa Clarita’s headquarters.

The top three story winners receive a $500 American Express gift card and a one-year subscription to Today’s Caregiver Magazine, the company announced.

Five runners-up will also be awarded the magazine subscription and a $150 American Express gift card.
Contest entries must be one page and emailed to, submitted via online entry form or mailed and postmarked by Nov. 30.

The story contest runs from Sept. 3 through Nov. 30.
