Cast your vote, take your chances

Signal reader Bob Baxton brings up an interesting point ("Tired of the mantra," Letters, Feb. 27) about our politics in general. Most recently in Sacramento and presently in Washington, D.C., we have seen the results of a system that has been prevalent in our two-party system for much too long.

It's called partisanship and obstructionism, and it's practiced by the political party out of voters' favor.

For example, in the waning days of the past administration, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson asked Congress for $700 billion, and he had to have it now.

Neither accountability nor a plan was provided. Our Congressman Howard P. "Buck" McKeon voted for it.

Now the Democratic party has a plan. McKeon and every single Republican Congressman in the House voted against it.

That leaves the American voter with false illusions their representatives will vote for what's best for our country.

Rush Limbaugh wants Obama to fail, A Signal reader stated, "I truly hope President Obama fails" ("No support for Obama," Letters, Feb. 13).

If the present plans fail, we as a country and as citizens of America, will also fail.

I prefer to take the attitude of others like Dick Shaw who said, "I did not vote for the present party but I will be rooting like heck for them. Let's get rid of the us-against-them mentality."

As Bob Levine wrote, "Now is the time to put aside the differences and work together" ("Stop the whining," Letters, Feb. 24).

Together, our Congressman and Senator Barbara Boxer introduced H.R. 6156, a bill protecting nearly a half a million wilderness acres in California. McKeon said, "I want to thank Senator Boxer." Barbara Boxer replied, "McKeon and I were able to forge a bipartisan compromise."

That's how it should work. What a country.
