Foothill League Prep Football Week 5 Lookahead

Canyon (3-0) at Notre Dame (3-1)

Where: Notre Dame High

When: Friday 7 p.m.

Last season: Did not play

Outlook: The Canyon defense has been nothing short of outstanding this season, allowing just 10 points per game, while the offense has averaged 42.

The Cowboys, though, face without a doubt their biggest test of the season to date when they travel to Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks.

Knights quarterback Grant Kraemer, who is completeing 64 percent of his passes, will test the Canyon secondary.

The majority of the Knights’ offense, though, will come on the ground with running back Chris Colarossi, who is averaging 128.5 yards per game.

How Canyon plays up front could have a lot to say about the final score.

Hart (3-0) at Birmingham (3-1)

Where: Birmingham High

When: Today 7 p.m.

Last season: Hart won 55-14

Outlook: Birmingham may be 3-1 on the season, but the former City Section power hasn’t come close to beating a team of Hart’s caliber.

The Patriots defeated Banning, Kennedy and Fairfax to start the season, but struggled against Notre Dame last week in a 28-5 loss.

Birmingham allowed 271 yards on the ground to the Knights and gave up an average of 25.33 yards per reception.

That’s an area Hart offense, which hasn’t had any issues passing the ball to date, should be able to exploit.

Santa Monica (2-1) at Valencia (2-1)

Where: Valencia High

When: Friday 7 p.m.

Last Season: Valencia won 41-13

Outlook: After starting the season 2-0, Santa Monica High ran into a buzzsaw when they faced Mater Dei last week in a 37-0 loss at home.

This week, they bring a fairly balanced offensive attack to Valencia, where they’ll look to erase the memory of last season’s 41-13 loss.

Outside of Mater Dei, Santa Monica hasn’t faced an offense with Valencia’s capabilities in wins over Redondo Union and Palisades.

Valencia’s defense should be able to dictate what Santa Monica does, and Samohi will likely have trouble stopping quarterback Jake Wallace and his receiving corps once they get into a rythm.

West Ranch (3-1) at Oxnard (0-3)

Where: Oxnard High

When: Friday 7 p.m.

Last year: Did not play.

Outlook: West Ranch held its own against Thousand Oaks of the Marmonte League last week, holding a 9-7 lead in the fourth quarter.

This week they face 0-3 Oxnard, which has had very little success on offense in 2013.

Don’t expect quarterback Dalton Pagano to throw much (12-for-26, 67 yards on the year). The Yellowjackets do average almost 4-yards per carry on the ground, which was the lone area West Ranch was hurt last week.

Offensively, Wildcats’ quarterback Chase Killingsworth commanded the pocket well, and should again against an Oxnard team with 0 sacks to date.
