Kenneth Dean: Being hung by the cables

To be or not to be! That is the question. To be held hostage by the cable company monopolies has become outrageous and disgusting.

As I am sure that most will agree, these cable companies are completely out of control. They do what they like and when they like.

If they feel like raising your cost, they just go and do it. If they want to add a service without asking if you want it, they just do it and add another charge to your bill.

They keep taking channels off that you enjoyed watching and yet continue to raise your cost. If you have seen a film like “The Green Mile,” “Con Air,” or “Pretty Woman” once, you have seen it 30 times.

This is nothing more that a tactic to get subscribers to upgrade and further line the pockets of the cable monopolies. Does this sound familiar?

The Signal ran a great editorial on the out-of-control cable companies on Sept. 15 and hit it right on the factual head. I urge everyone to read this editorial, specifically Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon and legislators Scott Wilk and Steve Knight.

The cable companies work on that great premise of bait-and-switch. They bait you in on the promise of something that they say is a good deal for you, and once they have a hold on you, they switch to something that is a good deal for them, leaving you bewildered.

Ask yourself, do you enjoy having to watch children’s cartoons at 11 p.m. at night, or so-called adult cartoons, or these talk shows?

The question is ... are you happy with your cable provider? If you are, do nothing, which is what they are banking on.
If you’re not pleased, demand legislation from your legislative representative and demand regulation to protect consumers.

As it is today, there is very little regulation, which is why these cable companies are doing as they please.
Many years ago Washington broke up the monopolies, and yet they’re back under names like Time Warner. The time is now to take action — or they will continue to spiral out of control.

Your representatives are Congressman “Buck” McKeon at 661-254-2111, Assemblyman Scott Wilk at 661-286-1565, and state Senator Steve Knight at (661) 286-1471.

Kenneth Dean is a Santa Clarita resident.
