SANTA CLARITA - One of two men arrested more than a year ago for robbing a local AT&T store at gunpoint was found guilty by a jury of 26 felony counts, according to the man who prosecuted the pair.

“This was for a series of crimes including the robbery at the At&T store in Santa Clarita,” Deputy District Attorney Jeffrey Greenberg told The Signal Wednesday.

The pair robbed Radio Shack outlets in Palmdale, Granada Hills and Chatsworth, he said. “We had a lot of store employees as witnesses. At the AT&T in Santa Clarita we had customers and employees.”

After two hours of deliberation, a jury at San Fernando Superior Court on Monday found Jahrell Hayes, 26, of Palmdale, guilty of:

• Six counts of kidnapping for the purpose of robbery;
• Seven counts of kidnapping;
• 10 counts of second-degree robbery;
• Two counts of false imprisonment by violence; and
• One count of possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.

“Jurors additionally found true 23 allegations of personal use of a firearm,” said Shiara Dávila-Morales, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

“Hayes is expected to be sentenced on Oct. 23,” she said. “He faces multiple life terms in state prison.”

A second man charged in the same series of holdups, identified as codefendant Marc Wise, 25, of Quartz Hill, pleaded no contest in April to three counts of second-degree robbery, Dávila-Morales said.

“Wise additionally admitted a prior strike for robbery,” she said.

Wise is expected to be sentenced Oct. 15 at San Fernando Superior Court.

“Under the terms of a negotiated plea agreement, Wise is expected to be sentenced to 20 years in state prison,” Dávila-Morales said.

Hayes and Wise were arrested in March 2012 in the 6300 block of Crenshaw Avenue in Los Angeles, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials said.

They were booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on charges of kidnapping and armed robbery.

Hayes and Wise entered the Santa Clarita Valley AT&T store in the 26400 block of Bouquet Canyon Road with handguns the day before their arrest and stole several thousand dollars worth of cellphones and iPads.

They fled before local deputies could reach the scene of the crime, according to a news release issued by the sheriff’s station at the time.

They were arrested after being spotted entering a motel in the Hyde Park area.
