Three football coaches with Santa Clarita Valley ties are part of a poll to determine the best coach in the state of California.

Hart High head coach Mike Herrington is the only current SCV football coach up for USA Today High School Sports “Best Of” contest to determine who is the best football coach in California.

Former Canyon High and current Santa Margarita of Rancho Santa Margarita head coach Harry Welch and SCV resident and Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks head coach Kevin Rooney are also in the poll.

As of Tuesday, Herrington was in first place in the voting and Welch was in second place.

The state voting will end at 9 a.m. on Oct. 8 through

The 51 winners, each state plus Washington, D.C., advance to a regional round, where they will be divided among eight regions of six or seven coaches apiece.

The regional round voting begins Oct. 9 and ends Oct. 18.

The eight regional winners move onto the national round voting, starts Oct. 21 and ends Oct. 29.

The athletic department of the winning coach will receive $2,000.

Second through fifth places also receive cash prizes for the athletic departments: second ($1,000), third ($500), fourth ($250) and fifth ($100). All eight finalists receive banners for their schools.

The other five coaches in the running for California are Mission Viejo’s Bob Johnson, Mater Dei’s Bruce Rollinson, Los Alamitos’ John Barnes, Charter Oaks’ Lou Farrar and Dorsey’s Paul Knox.
