SANTA CLARITA - One northbound lane of Interstate 5 north of the Santa Clarita Valley is expected to be closed until late this morning while officials from the California Highway Patrol deal with a big rig that went off the side of the freeway.

CHP Officer Ed Jacobs said the big rig was reported off the road, about 20 to 30 feet down an embankment around 12:53 a.m. today near Smokey Bear Road.

The truck was apparently carrying 46,000 pounds of batteries at the time of the crash, Jacobs said. The right-most I-5 lane near Smokey Bear Road is closed while officials deal with the truck.

“They’re offloading it (the truck) right now and they’re trying to upright it so it will probably another hour or half and a half,” Jacobs said shortly before 10 a.m.

It appears there was at least one injury as a result of the incident, Jacobs said, though the extent and number of any injuries is currently unclear.

Also unclear at this time is whether the recent high winds, which can have a major impact on high-profile vehicles such as big rigs, played a role in the incident.
