SANTA CLARITA - A man estranged from his family was arrested this week on suspicion of trying to kidnap his child from a Canyon Country home, sheriff’s officials said Thursday.

Deputy Josh Dubin said the suspect, identified as 36-year-old David Maryniak, was arrested Wednesday evening after a brief manhunt involving Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station detectives, the crime impact team and detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau.

Dubin said the manhunt began Tuesday night, when deputies responded to the 19500 block of Delight Street in Canyon Country.

When they arrived a male suspect, now identified as Maryniak, fled the scene and eluded a containment area set up to capture him, Dubin said.

An investigation into the matter turned up several items that led detectives to suspect Maryniak was attempting to kidnap his child from his estranged wife and family, according to Dubin, but the response from deputies thwarted that attempt.

The search for Maryniak lasted until around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, when his car was discovered in the parking lot of a Walgreens store on Soledad Canyon and Whites Canyon roads.

Maryniak was found inside the store, according to Dubin.

Maryniak was arrested without incident and has since been booked on charges of attempted kidnapping and stalking, Dubin said. His bail has been set at $1.645 million.

On booking records from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Maryniak lists his home address as a residence in Castaic.

He is scheduled to appear in court in San Fernando Superior Court on the charges, according to Sheriff’s Station officials.
