The brotherhood of support

I currently work for Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department at one of the jails at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic.

I am also a military liaison for our department which means I help our employees who also serve our country as military reservists when they transition between home, work and deployments.

My husband, Kevin Duxbury, is an Army veteran himself and a Deputy at Santa Clarita Station.

Kevin’s co-worker, Luis Gaxiola, also a deputy at the Santa Clarita station, has been diagnosed with a rare and serious form of cancer which, of course, has changed his life drastically.

Luis is also a proud Army veteran with more than 25 years and several deployments in service to his country. To help, my husband intends to put on a fundraiser for the Gaxiola family.

Kevin plans to put his now out-of-service Army fatigues back on, fill his old, used ruck sack with 65 lbs of weight - and walk (“hump”!)- across the Santa Clarita Valley. He wants to raise awareness for the Gaxiola family and hopefully raise donations for them as they have been hit hard with now limited work, medical bills and financial and other stressors, of course.

Luis is currently undergoing more rounds of chemo but has a great attitude.

It is our hope to show him our love and thanks for his service, and our joint hope and support for him while he goes through this journey of his life.

We are planning the walk on Saturday, Nov. 9th. The walk begins at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s station.
LASD’s “Military Activation Committee,” of which I am also a part, is backing this event and our department.
I am really looking forward to the community’s awareness and help as well.
