State board offers restaurant tax help

The California state Board of Equalization is holding a Telephone Town Hall at 10 a.m. on Oct. 28 to provide advice for the state’s restaurateurs on how best to comply with tax codes.

Every day, restaurant operators face challenges with tax laws in the state of California.
The laws can be complicated and at times confusing, and owners can face stiff penalties and interest if deadlines and accuracy are not met.

George Runner, state BOE member, will offer advice specific to the restaurant industry, said a spokesperson.

Some of the tax issues that cause confusion for restaurant owners include whether a mandatory tip is taxable; or how tax provisions apply to hot food items, cold food items and to-go orders.

Understanding the tax laws clearly will allow restaurant operators to spend less time concerning themselves with tax issues and more time running their restaurants, said the spokesperson.
