Members of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to authorize an option agreement to purchase and expand the Castaic Library on Sloan Canyon Road, marking the second time in recent weeks the board has moved to augment the county’s library resources.

Under the terms of the option agreement forged in 2012, the property will undergo a series of “tenant improvements” — including expanding the Castaic Library facility by 5,247 square feet, bringing the total square footage up to 12,232, along with 49 parking spaces.

The county will then purchase the expanded and upgraded facility, which is located at 27971 Sloan Canyon Road.
Final purchase of the library will not be complete until the tenant improvements on the site are completed, which is expected to be around June 2014, according to board documents.

The total cost of the acquisition is currently estimated at $2,361,500.

The option agreement was the result of searching for the “most cost-effective means for housing the library on a long-term basis,” according to the board report on the item.

As proposed, the expanded library will be equipped with current technology and include an opening-day collection of about 60,000 books and other materials, an 80-seat meeting room, other group study rooms, a children’s area and a teen center, including a space for filmmaking and digital projects, according to board documents.

This is the second time in recent weeks supervisors have voted to expand library offerings in an unincorporated area of the Santa Clarita Valley.

Supervisors voted in early September to secure a site on The Old Road to house a library facility in Stevenson Ranch.
