Runners will converge on Santa Clarita this Sunday for the 18th Santa Clarita Marathon, an official qualifying race for the Boston Marathon.

For those daunted by the prospect of a 26.2-mile run, the event also offers a half marathon, 5K run, a Kids’ K and a three-mile Mayor’s Walk, a chance to get out and get some exercise with Mayor Bob Kellar.

The Kids’ K, for youngsters 12 and under, gets under way at 8:30 a.m. at Westfield Valencia Town Center. The rest of the events begin at or near 7 a.m. at Town Center Drive.

Like many Santa Clarita Valley events, Sunday’s will be a family affair, with a pre-race Health and Fitness Expo on Saturday at the Hyatt Regency Valencia from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents can sign up for one of the races there.

Road closures around Santa Clarita will be imposed Sunday during the run.

Although it's been 19 years since Santa Clarita held its first marathon, this is actually the 18th event,  began, city Arts and Events Supervisor Pat Downing said. One year the marathon was canceled due to heavy smoke from multiple brush fires in the valley.

This year, the race will use new trails along San Francisquito Creek, providing scenic views for runners and helping keep McBean Parkway as clear as possible.

However, residents are asked to avoid McBean between Newhall Ranch Road and Magic Mountain Parkway on Sunday due to road work combined with the race closures.

Road closures will include:

- McBean Parkway from Magic Mountain Parkway to Valencia Boulevard will be closed from 5 a.m. to 7:15 a.m.

- Westbound Valencia Boulevard will be detoured via Citrus Avenue to Magic Mountain Parkway from 6:00 a.m. to 7:15 a.m.

- Magic Mountain at Tourney Road will be closed from 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.

- Drivers should expect delays in the Industrial Center on Avenue Scott, Avenue Stanford, Avenue Rockefeller, Anza Drive and Avenue Hopkins from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

- Newhall Ranch Road will be closed at Avenue Tibbits and McBean Parkway from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

- One eastbound lane on Copper Hill Drive at McBean Parkway will be closed from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

- Although Estaban Drive will remain open, motorists should use caution and be mindful of runners crossing the street from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

- The Cinema Parking Structure and Auto Center Drive entrance at the Westfield Valencia Town will be closed from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. to accommodate race participants.
