Applaud local board members for their service

This is a time when a great many Americans across the country are so unhappy with the goings-on of our representatives in Washington that the thinking for the coming elections is, “Throw the rascals out” and “Let’s give the incumbents their walking papers.”

There is no question that the country is just plain fed up with Washington, but when I consider the election of people to sit on our local school boards I have a hopeful view.

These will be the people who will have a guiding hand on the education of our children.

It’s a tough, sometimes tedious, almost always thankless, time-consuming job. Thank goodness we have people who are willing to give of themselves for the good of our children.

We must applaud them for their service. It is truly an example of citizenship without any self-serving motives.

This was my thinking when I began to write this letter last week, but then on Thursday something happened that made me question my thinking.

My phone rang and when I answered it a voice said this is the Los Angeles Democratic Party urging you to vote for (I’m leaving out the name, because the “who” it was is not the point) for the Newhall School District board.

The Democratic Party is interested in the school board?

“Could it be,” I began to think, “that this individual’s motive for running for the board is not as pure and honorable as I assumed.”

Is the board merely a platform to run for a truly political office? Well, if this person is elected and does their best for the children, I will not worry about their motives.

But when I realize that political parties have become involved in
our school boards, which are supposed to be non-partisan offices — it bothers the heck out of me.

I guess I’m a bit naïve, but I like to believe that good people can do good things without political motives.
