Placing blame on bicyclist outageous

Jim Holt’s account of a deadly collision between truck and bicycle on Oct. 30 (“Bicyclist Killed In SCV Collision”) was outrageous in its indictment of the dead cyclist as having done everything wrong, essentially reporting that it was all the cyclist’s fault.

It is not just disrespectful of the dead cyclist to not give any benefit of doubt whatsoever to his circumstance, but terrible journalism to repeat unfounded allegations before any investigation is complete.

It seems that the cyclist crossed into a crosswalk on a bicycle against the light, according to witnesses. That is an allegation, not yet a point of fact.

It seems that the cyclist was going the wrong way on the only sidewalk on Railroad Avenue. What exactly does that mean?

Do not demonize this poor man for allegedly mistakenly riding into the path of a truck. Have some respect.

Editor’s note: The report was based almost entirely on information provided by the Sheriff’s Department investigator at the scene. Assigning fault is part of the investigator’s job, and his or her comments are not “unfounded allegations,” but the observations of a trained investigator.
