Hart district OKs dress code change

The Hart district board approved a change in the graduation dress-code policy Wednesday to allow high school seniors to wear military uniforms during the ceremony.

The policy change makes an exception for a student who graduated early, completed basic training and serves as an active member of the armed services, allowing the student to wear their military uniform with the permission of the commanding officer.

Saugus High School Principal Bill Bolde initially denied senior Nicholas Laccabue's request to wear his Marine uniform to the high school's graduation in June.

Laccabue, 17, finished high school early and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and expects to finish basic training before graduation.

Bolde later changed his mind and is allowing Laccabue to wear his uniform.

Another aspect of the new policy allows the family of a student who died before graduation to receive an honorary certificate of completion in the child's honor during the graduation ceremony.

A final second reading of the policy will take place during a later William S. Hart Union High School District board meeting.
