Workers have repaired a portion of the northbound Interstate 5 near Weldon Canyon Road in Newhall, which was closed for hours after the roadway cracked and broke, a California Highway Patrol official said Friday.

CHP Officer Monica Posada said the damage to the roadway was first reported shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday, and the right-most lane on the northbound freeway was shut down for emergency road repairs.

Crews worked overnight and the road was fully repaired and reopened around noon, Posada said.

Some reports indicated concrete on the road had been damaged so much it was sticking a foot off the road.
