A thank you to our veterans

Veterans Day. 11/11. A special day, a time to honor our country’s heroes. Those who have served this great nation have done so in times of peace and in times of war. They protect and defend our country and allow us to live our lives with the freedoms we all expect, enjoy, and all too often take for granted. We can live the American Dream thanks to these brave men and women. These fine citizens serve and sacrifice, their families standing beside them while so often across the miles. They are America’s veterans and military, more than 25 million living.

It is with great hope and pride that they serve and sacrifice, not asking for acknowledgement or gratitude. Yet, across the nation, our communities rally behind them by flying our flags, displaying yellow ribbons, contributing goods and funds so that the organizations sending care packages overseas and attending to our VA Hospitals may continue to touch our military and veterans’ lives. Santa Clarita is exemplary in these acts of support, but we can do more.

Throughout the year, and on November 11 – Veteran’s Day - please remember those who have taken this oath:
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”

Do you know someone who has spoken these heroic words, this amazing oath? Many thousand men and women, citizens of Santa Clarita, have spoken these words. Here, in our city, we have among us Veterans going back to WWII as well as those currently serving - many of whom have served in one or more deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan and other places worldwide. Please reflect back over the years and ask yourself who you might know who has served, and how you might affect their lives by simply saying, “Thank you.” We can all say these words proudly and freely, because it is due to their sacrifice that we are allowed to speak freely and say something so simple that would affect someone’s life so greatly.

These heroes never ask for our recognition or gratitude, yet they deserve our appreciation every day.

In honor of you all, this Veteran’s Day, November 11 ‑ Thank you Veterans!

Supporting and honoring those who serve and have served,
