English should be the official language in our country

In response to Cheryl Lagrasta’s article, I would like to explain how difficult it is to learn a second language — but it can be done.

I speak French fluently because I was born and lived in France for 40 years. I am aware that English is a wonderful language. I love its details in international laws, business, and literature.

In America, we have a universal language. I am also proud to be bilingual.

It took 20 years for me to balance my life between my two languages. I learned English because I was respectful for my land of opportunities as well as respectful for the man who married me and brought me here with my three children.

I wanted to learn English for the future of our children and grandchildren. Understanding the world around us, I paid attention to its details.

I did not want to impose my native language on others.

Watching T.V., listening to the radio, and reading newspapers in English helped me in my new adventure. I learned the basic language doing homework with our grandchild.

Helping teachers in kindergarten and first grades opened the doors for me to a new language. Doing so, I was building the foundation of our home.

I didn’t teach French to my grandchildren because I was too busy working, taking care of our home, being responsible for the children, and learning a second language. I even volunteered my time removing graffiti and helped other associations.

I was pursuing the American dream for our children and their children. Nothing was handed to me.

I had to learn English to vote, pass my DMV tests, and make sure that our kids were doing fine at school.

I am an American today because it took 20 years for me to speak, and write, English. I fulfilled my dream and I respected along the way my country as well as the people surrounding me.

Now I can dedicate my time teaching French to my grandchildren.

Cheryl, I agree with you. English shall be the official language in the United States of America. When are our government entities going to understand it?
