SANTA CLARITA - A 37-year-old man was found dead behind a strip mall in Saugus, a local sheriff’s lieutenant said Tuesday.

Shortly before 7 a.m. Monday, a passerby contacted Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s deputies after finding a man near a strip mall at the intersection of Bouquet Canyon Road and Soledad Canyon Road, said Lt. Mark Hershey.

“Someone saw him and called us saying, ‘I’m worried. He looks like he’s asleep but someone should check on him,’” Hershey said Tuesday.

“We responded there and found him dead,” the lieutenant said.

The man has been identified as Robert J. Hart by officials with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Department.

“He was found lying on the ground behind a business,” said Department spokesman Ed Winter.

The coroner was called at 7:10 a.m. Monday, to an address in the 23000 block of Soledad Canyon Road, he said.

There is no official cause or manner of death, he said.

Deputies who are familiar with the man said they suspect his death is due to problems related to alcohol abuse. Winter said the victim appears to be a transient.

Foul play is not suspected, Hershey said.

An autopsy is pending, Winter said.
