Hart v-ball short on comeback bid

At least the Hart Indians girls volleyball team proved one thing on Tuesday night.

It’s not a squad that was willing to quit.

But despite rallying to force a fifth and deciding game, Hart lost 3-2 to Redlands in the opening round of the CIF-Southern Section Division IA playoffs at Redlands High.

Redlands won the first two games 25-18, 25-18 before Hart fought back to win 25-12, 25-23. The Redlands Terriers sealed it with a 15-12 victory in game five.

“It was kind of expected I guess with having such a young group,” said Hart head coach Mary Keen of the near comeback. “It’s an athletic group and they never give up.”

Corrine Holloway led the Indians (15-12) 12 kills and Claire Cansler added 11 kills and 15 blocks.

That put Cansler’s season total at 130 blocks, which broke the single-season school record of 115 set by Breena Beckett in 2009.

It was performances like those that allowed Hart to win the third and fourth game.

Through games one and two, the Indians committed 18 unforced errors. In games three and four, Hart had zero hitting and serving miscues.

But Redlands (16-10), the second-place finisher out of the Citrus Belt League, took back control in the fifth game and managed to hold off a Hart team that boasts just one senior on the roster.

Also contributing for Hart was Brianne Beeman (10 kills), Erin Indermill (27 assists) and Megan Reck (21 assists).

The only senior Hart will lose is Hayden Harker, while the majority of the key players will return.

“They already like each other,” Keen said of the team. “It’s a good, solid group. They’re very talented.”
