The Valencia graduate-turned professional golfer is inching closer to earning a spot on one of the sport’s most elite pro tours.

In the second stage of Qualifying School, Max Homa carded a 1-under 71 for his third round on Thursday at Deerwood Golf Club in Kingwood, Texas.

With three rounds down and one to play today, Homa is 1-under overall and tied for ninth place in a 79-player field.

At the end of today’s round, the top 20 finishers from the event will advance to the final stage of Q-School, which takes place Dec. 12-17 in La Quinta.

It is there where a number of top-finishing golfers will earn their Tour cards for the 2014 season.

The Tour is one step below golf’s most prestigious group, the PGA Tour.

Q-School takes place over the course of two months and is separated into three stages.

Homa competed in the first stage last month and easily qualified for stage two after earning medalist honors at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C.

This week, he’s posted scores of 69, 75 and Thursday’s 71 on the par-72 Deerwood course.

With three rounds completed, the cutline for the top 20 plus ties is at 2-over.

Homa will have to stay above that mark to move on.

He starts his fourth round today at 9:55 a.m. in Kingwood, or 7:55 a.m. Pacific Time.
