Spring officially began on Friday, and it sure seems to be busting out all over the Santa Clarita Valley these days. However, it looks like winter is paying us one last blast. That's fine with me, spring is lovely, but I love winter.

Entertainment of the year
Hands down, my favorite event of the year to date as been "That '70s Cabaret" held recently at the Canyon Theatre Guild. I remember the 1970s with great fondness, and the CTG brought the era back to life with fun and frolic. Among those seen at the annual fundraiser were Connie Worden Roberts, Harold and Jacquie Petersen, Doug and Sue Sink, Diane Trautman and Marsha McLean.

Seen at Madrigal Feast
Signal correspondent Annemarie Donkin reported the Master Chorale's Madrigal Feast was also a great event - full of merriment and fun. Among the prominent first time attendees were city Councilwoman Marsha McLean, Marlee Lauffer from Newhall Land, Allan and Diane Trautman, artist Lorelle Miller from the Santa Clarita Arts Committee and her husband, Warren Miller.

Kudos to Danielle Jacobs and Ben Staley
Danielle Jacobs, daughter of Jeri Jacobs of the Travel Bug, submitted her short film "boy/man" to the International Family Film Festival held in Hollywood Feb. 27 to March 1. Jacobs and Ben Staley captured the prize for "Best Dramatic Short Film." The IFFF was founded by SCV residents and previously was held in the SCV but relocated to Hollywood a few years ago. This year's fest was held at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood. "Boy/man" screened a few months ago in Newhall at the SCV Film Festival held at the Repertory East Playhouse.

Jason Tippet and Elizabeth Mims, kudos
The jury and audience award winners of the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival were announced Tuesday at the Festival's closing Awards ceremony hosted by comedian Jimmy Roulette. Jason Tippet of Valencia was named the winner of the jury award in the "Reel Shorts" category for his short film "Thompson." The Signal profiled Tippet and Elizabeth Mims (the producer of "Thompson") in the March 8 Lifestyle style section before the duo left for the Festival held in Austin, Texas.

Circle of Hope sees costs rise
Colleen Shaffer, founder of Circle of Hope, reports that the breast cancer support group has seen costs rise 67 percent for medical and financial services that Circle of Hope has paid out in the last year. This is the "little" nonprofit that "can do." This group provides hope and help in a hands on fashion to SCV residents suffering from breast cancer. For more information visit Sign up for the Circle of Hope 5K Walk for Hope to be held April 18 at Castaic Lake.
