A chorus of half a dozen local marching bands sounded like winners this weekend at the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association championships, with gold medals going to the bands from Hart High School and Valencia High School, according to local school officials and a competition representative.

All six of the high schools in the William S. Hart Union School District had marching bands make it to the state championships Saturday, said Mike Gangemi, assistant director of bands at Westlake High School, who maintains the association’s website.

“This is a huge deal, where every high school band in the district made the championships.” Gangemi said.
“Santa Clarita had six schools and every one of them made it,” he said. “That is a big accomplishment.”

In addition to the gold medal wins by Hart and Valencia high schools, the marching band from Canyon High School garnered 4th place, West Ranch High School 5th place, Saugus High School 7th place and Golden Valley High School 8th place in each of their respective divisions.

In all, more than 72 marching bands competed at three venues in Southern California Saturday.
“I was at the Riverside competition and I saw Canyon and West Ranch perform and they were both amazing,” Gangemi said.

The Hart School District Governing Board is planning to recognize all six marching bands and color guard units at a school board meeting on Feb. 5 of next year, Gail Pinsker, spokeswoman for the William S. Hart Union School District, said Sunday.

“Congrats to you all,” she said in the email.

The bands are in divisions based on band size. The top 12 bands from Southern California qualify to perform at Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association Championships based on their top 3 band scores of the season.

“All six schools in the Hart District Qualified, which is a major feat in itself,” Melissa Palmer, Director of Bands for Canyon High School, said in an email.
