Rest In Peace Eugene Brown

It’s not that easy to work in a retail store because you come across so many customer situations. Some days can be good and others can drag on making you feel tired, and at some point – lazy. I am sure we have all experienced those days more than once.

I must say, however, that the best part of working retail for everyone who works at the Goodwill in Saugus is seeing your everyday customers who actually become more than a customer or a buyer – they become family.

You know the customers by name and have conversations with them like anyone else you know. You joke around and laugh and you start to realize they are not coming in three times a day to shop – they come in to enjoy the atmosphere of the store and the people work and shop there. You hear the laughter all the way from the back to the front of the store.

Our daily family members realize we have fun at work and enjoy being here. As employees we have our moments and butt heads but what work place doesn’t? But, the hard part is when you get so attached to a customer and something bad happens and you are so concerned and worried.

We did have a “family” member, Eugene Brown, who would come in daily. Eugene was a very warm, loving, caring, giving, sweet older man that would just sit for hours in “his same old chair” by the shoes in the store and just watch us all work.

If we didn’t give him a hard time, you can bet he gave us one while waiting for the “treasure” of merchandise on the carts to roll on out. Eugene joked around and put smiles on all our faces.

When we got phone call at work from another “family member” – or customer - saying that Eugene got into a horrible car accident, we didn’t even know what to think; “Was I dreaming? I must be.”

It was even harder receiving another phone call a few days later and hearing those terrible words: Eugene has passed away. Going back to work and looking at “his” chair will never be the same.

It might sound odd to many, but every day now I go up to Eugene’s chair, kiss my hand and then touch the chair! I will always care about this man.

Everyone who worked at Goodwill in Saugus desperately wanted to close the store to attend funeral services for Eugene to say our goodbyes. As the Goodwill is a business, the district manager explained we couldn’t close the store. But, she suggested that I go with my assistant manager, Liz Will, to attend Eugene’s services as representatives of the store.

Just because we are not blood related doesn’t mean we are not family. Family is defined in multiple ways.

From all of us from the Goodwill store in Saugus all our condolences go out to Eugene’s friends and family.

Eugene will be forever missed. RIP Eugene Brown.

Eugene passed away on, Tuesday November 19, 2013. His service will be December 7th at 3 p.m. the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Newhall.
