The Metropolitan Water District has scheduled a monument unveiling Monday to honor the 17 men killed in a tunnel explosion in Sylmar on June 24, 1971.

At least two Santa Clarita Valley men were among those killed when methane that had accumulated in the tunnel exploded while they were working more than four months after the Feb. 9, 1971, Sylmar earthquake.

Some experts say the methane may have collected in the tunnel due to the quake.

A monument to the 17 men and lone survivor will be dedicated at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the courtyard of the MWD main offices, 700 N. Alameda in Los Angeles.
