Some of the Santa Clarita’s top runners and challenge-takers have scaled The Beast the last six Decembers to benefit the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry.

They can do it again this Saturday for the seventh annual event.

Organized by former Signal Sports staff writer Craig Leener, the scaling of The Beast benefits the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry through donations.

The Beast is a dirt-and-gravel fire road that begins at the park-and-ride where Newhall Avenue dead-ends just east of Highway 14.

Starting from an elevation of 1,100 feet above sea level, the trail winds steeply up the foothills of Whitney Canyon Park all the way to Los Pinetos Peak at an altitude of 3,864 feet.

Round trip is approximately 9.5 miles.

Start time is 7:30 a.m.

A $25 pledge earns participants a commemorative T-shirt.

The event is sponsored by local specialty running shoe store Runners Lane.

This is a non-competitive event and those who want to donate to the Food Pantry and not scale The Beast can do so by visiting

The event info is also on the website.
