A memorial is scheduled Saturday to celebrate the life of Deputy Devin Joel Freeman, a much-beloved school resource officer who died in November after a six-year battle with cancer.

The memorial will be held at Canyon High School, 19300 Nadal St., beginning at 3:30 p.m. inside the gymnasium of the high school.

“Devin sure loved being a Cowboy and it makes sense that no other location would feel right for his service,” reads a post on the “Freeman Family Fight” Facebook page, which was set up to support him.

Freeman was diagnosed with ocular melanoma in 2007 and last April was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma to the liver.

He died Thanksgiving Day at the age of 38.

Freeman worked as a school resource officer at both Sierra Vista Junior High and Canyon High. He also helped with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Crime Prevention Unit, the detective unit and the off-road motorcycle team.

A procession of patrol vehicles will leave the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and begin lining Citrus Street in Valencia at 2:15 p.m.

The patrol vehicles will then travel from the station to Canyon High School for the memorial.

Overflow parking for the memorial will be available on Nadal Street in front of Canyon High School.

Out of respect to the family, no photography will be permitted inside the gymnasium during the memorial service.
