The filing period for April’s Santa Clarita City Council election opened Monday, and already eight people have pulled papers to run, according to officials.

As of Thursday, the eight people who had collected paperwork to file for a council run are Dante Acosta, Moazzem H. Chowdhury, Stephen Daniels, Alan Ferdman, Maria Gutzeit, Paul J. Wieczorek and incumbents Councilwoman Marsha McLean and Mayor Laurene Weste.

Simply pulling the papers does not commit the candidate to running for office; he or she must fill out paperwork and file it to prove qualification for candidacy.

While many of the early potential candidates have already publicly committed to runs, Chowdhury, Daniels and Wieczorek would be newcomers to the race should they file.

Others who have announced they plan to run include Duane Harte, Berta Gonzalez-Harper and Gloria Mercado-Fortine.

Those who intend to follow through with a run need to collect signatures from at least 20 eligible and registered voters in the city and return completed paperwork to the City Clerk’s office by Jan. 10, according to Interim City Clerk Armine Chaparyan.

“Between now and Jan. 10 we are going to have these candidates going around, getting their signatures, filling out their paperwork and bringing it back to us,” she said Thursday during a meeting at Santa Clarita City Hall.

In preparation for the election, officials have been updating the city’s election website, Some new features include the ability to view election information and materials in two new languages: Korean and Vietnamese.”

Those materials are also available in English and Spanish.

Three seats are up for grabs in this election, which will be held April 8. A third incumbent council member, Frank Ferry, has said he will not run for another term.
