Do you want fries with that accident?

A big rig loaded with frozen french fries crashed on Interstate 5 early Sunday morning, after it plunged down an embankment and flipped onto its side, officers with the California Highway Patrol said.

The driver was not injured in the single-vehicle traffic collision, according to CHP.

“They rescued the fries,” one CHP officer said late Sunday afternoon.

Shortly after 2:30 a.m., the refrigerated truck loaded with about 40,000 pounds of French fries and southbound on Interstate 5 left the freeway near the Whitaker brake check and went down a 30-foot embankment.

Smoke was seen coming from the wreck but there was no report of any resulting fire.

Efforts to tow the truck from the ravine tied up traffic until after sunrise.

CHP closed the two inside southbound lanes of the freeway for about eight hours, CHP reported, reopening both lanes at about 11 a.m.
