Erwin Torres Fundraisers

Erwin Torres, 23, of Saugus died in a car accident in the city of Downey on Tuesday March 4. He was born on March 26, 1984 in Guatemala, and was a graduate of Saugus High School in 2003. Most recently he was a student and an apprentice electrician. The family has been able to raise some money for the extensive burial costs, but they are still quite a way from meeting the expenses. Torres friends have set up a fundraiser at Freshworks California Grill on Saturday April 12, from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. The owner has been kind enough to let them keep 25 percent of your purchase. There will also be a buffet dinner at Egg Plantation on Saturday April 19 at 6 p.m. The tickets are $30. To purchase tickets call (661) 904-2895. Through these tough times, every little bit helps.

Income Tax Service for Seniors Now Available

IRS/AARP -trained volunteers are available to help seniors complete and electronically file income tax returns on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons through April 10 at the SCV Senior Center. Priority will be given to low- and middle-income seniors. Low-income families will be considered if space is available. Appointments are required. They can be made by calling Elaine at the SCV Senior Center, at (661) 259-9444.

Have with you at the appointment your ID (drivers license), Social Security card or similar, last year's tax return, if available, and 2007 tax information.

Events at Valencia Library

The READ to a Dog program will be held for children every second Saturday of the month and the Kid's Book Club for 4th and 5th graders will meet on the third Wednesday of every month at 3:30 p.m. The Valencia Library will host several performances relating to women in history and literature. Amelia Earhart will be portrayed by Roberta Bassin, a professional actress who has received acclaim for her performances on film, television, and stage. This meeting is on March 30 at 2 p.m. On April 13, from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m., Julia Barett, writer and professor at UCLA and USC, and author of "Jane Austen's Charlotte and Presumption," will bring Austen's characters to life. Community Forum

Long-time supporters of the SCV Emergency Winter Shelter, the Unitarian Universalists of Santa Clarita Valley have invited Tim Davis, executive director of the Santa Clarita Community Development Corporation (SCCDC), to speak after their church services on Sunday, March 30. Choral Performs 'The Armed Man'

The 50-voice Santa Clarita Master Chorale will present two performances of "The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace" by Karl Jenkins on Sunday March 30 at 4 p.m. and at 7 p.m. at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center, College of the Canyons, 26455 Rockwell Canyon Rd. In addition to professional instrumentalists, the chorale will be joined by choirs from College of the Canyons and three local high schools (Valencia, Canyon and West Ranch) to perform this multi-cultural work, which has already become a sensation in Europe.

Plein Air at Rancho Camulos

April 1 will be a Spring Plein Air Artist's Day at Rancho Camulos, from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. Artists are invited to spend the day at the museum to capture their impressions of the rancho on canvas, paper, film and other media. Fly in a B-17

Aluminum Overcast, the Experimental Aircraft Association's restored B-17 bomber, returns to the sky locally in April. The B-17 will be available for flights in Lancaster (WJF airport) April 1-2 and in Van Nuys (VNY airport) April 18-20. For information visit

Women in Service Honors

Outstanding volunteers will be honored at the 2008 Women in Service Celebration hosted by Zonta Club of the Santa Clarita Valley. A highlight of the morning will be the presentation of the Carmen Sarro Community Service Award to the one honoree whose contributions have made the most impact on the local community. This year's brunch will be held on Saturday April 5, at Valencia Country Club. Michelle Armstrong, author of "Manage Your Mind, Master Your Life," will be keynote speaker. Zonta is accepting reservations from friends and supporters of the nominees to attend the event. For 24 years Zonta has been saluting outstanding local women with this program. Movies to Talk About

Join Movies to Talk About on Thursday, April 10 at 6:30 p.m. for a showing of "Trashed," a provocative investigation of one of the fastest growing industries in North America - the garbage industry.

Passport to Hope Breakfast

Cancer survivors from across the Santa Clarita Valley are invited to attend a Passport to Hope educational breakfast on April 10. This event is free to cancer visitors over the age of 18 and will include workshops as well as motivation speakers and breakout groups to help survivors deal with their disease and its aftermath. Spring Blood Drive

Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital is encouraging the community to "spring into action" and help save a life by donating a unit of blood during the hospital's Spring Blood Drive on Thursday April 10 from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m., at the Henry Mayo/COC Clinical Education Center, 25727 McBean Parkway, Valencia. Giving blood is simple, painless, and it takes less than one hour. Any healthy person age of 17 or older and weighing at least 110 pounds, and who has not donated blood in the last eight weeks, may be able to donate blood. Sierra Club Showcase

The local Sierra Club will host an event on Thursday April 10, at 7:30 p.m. to showcase the group and its activities. There will be hike leaders describing different hikes that we lead, a continuously running slide show featuring hikes and events, leaders talking about the many environmental issues that face our community and members who can explain how it is organized and the resources available. Assistance League's 18th annual run/walk takes place on Sunday, April 20 at Newhall Park. This event benefits Operation School Bell, which provides new shoes, clothes, backpacks and school supplies to elementary school children in need in the Santa Clarita Valley.
