Extensive aesthetic and practical renovations are under way to add a new floor and repaint the interior of the gymnasium at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex, with the goal of wrapping up work in mid-January.

The scope of the work includes replacing the floor of the gymnasium with a new material that will be durable and “good for all ages,” according to Jerrid McKenna, recreation coordinator for youth sports for the city of Santa Clarita.

“When you walk in, it’s going to look brand new,” McKenna said Tuesday.

The main emphasis is the floor, McKenna said, as it has not been replaced since the gymnasium first opened more than a decade ago.

“It’s now going to be a thicker, rubber-type wood hybrid so it looks like wood, feels like wood, but it’s rubber so we can kind of maintain the use,” McKenna said. “If we put wood in there it just wouldn’t last.”

The gymnasium provides a venue to a variety of youth and adult sports ranging from volleyball to basketball and everything in between.

“It actually allows us to expand out the courts to make them regulation high school size,” he said.
The gym also sports new scoreboards, he said.

Work began on the interior renovation in November, and McKenna said the goal is for the gymnasium to reopen in mid-January in time for the next sports season.

While aesthetic updates are ongoing, no work is being done on the actual structure itself.

The budget for the project is $357,000, according to Christina McGoldrick, a spokeswoman for the city of Santa Clarita.
The gymnasium is part of the larger Santa Clarita Sports Complex, which is located at 20870 Centre Pointe Parkway.
