The Ralphs supermarket on Castaic Road in Castaic will close its doors on March 7, a spokeswoman for the retail chain said Friday.

The store is located at 31970 Castaic Road near Lake Hughes Road and the Interstate 5 freeway.

Another Ralphs on The Old Road and Hasley Canyon Road in Castaic will continue to operate.

Castaic resident Larry Ellis said he lives in the Castaic Lake Senior Village next door to Ralphs, and the store closure will be a hardship for many of the residents there. The complex has about 150 units, he estimated.

“A large percentage of those who live here just walk over there (to the store),” Ellis said. “A lot of them can’t drive. Where will they get their groceries?”

“There’s a lot of hope among my neighbors here that a Stater Bros. will go in there, or something else maybe with a little lower prices,” Ellis said.

The store on Castaic Road has been under-performing for several years, said Kendra Doyel, spokeswoman for Ralphs’ California stores. That under-performance has forced the chain to take the drastic measure of closing the store, she said.

“We never take the decision to close stores lightly,” Doyel said Friday.

Employees at the Castaic Road Ralphs, who were notified of the store’s closure Friday morning, are members of a union, and the process of helping them find other employment will begin soon, the spokeswoman said.

Doyel said the company hopes many can find work at the other Ralphs in Castaic.
