Welcome to 2014.

We’d like to thank our many Santa Clarita Valley writers who made the Our Community section such a compelling read in 2013.

Through the pages of Our Community, writers have introduced us to their faith, taken us on a journey to foreign countries, shared nostalgic stories and encouraged us to help each other in times of need.

Many of these writers shared remarkably personal experiences with us, and we marveled at the ability of people to remain strong in the face of overwhelming difficulties in life.

Three days before Christmas, a local mom shared that she was really scared Santa would not visit her little boys last week because she had fallen into very difficult times during the recession, had no living family members left to help, was balancing bills for one of her son’s medical expenses and hoping against hope not to lose her car. Yet, she paused to note how she loves her job working with SCV seniors because she gets to “help put a smile on” their faces each day.

Perhaps most remarkable to us, however, is the number of readers who tracked the young mother down to ensure her children would not miss a visit from Santa. Without any fanfare and out of the spotlight, local SCV residents stepped up to help and just gave from the heart.

We share the young mother’s “thank you” in this edition. And, we want to thank our caring community of readers.

Next Sunday read about how local firefighters helped a young man, who struggles to triumph over his autism and developmental delays, learn to read a calendar so he could visit his favorite firefighter.

In 2014, we invite the community to continue sending us such great stories and photos depicting their lives, experiences and journeys to Stories should run 400 to 700 words in length.

Don’t worry about how polished your story might be – we’ll help!
