A Castaic resident who stands accused of setting fire to a house on New Year’s Day pleaded not guilty Friday to a charge of arson.

The suspect, identified as Kristi Henderson, was arraigned Friday and charged with one count of arson stemming from a fire that caused extensive damage to a residence in the 31200 block of Quail Valley Road in Castaic, according to a spokesman for the District Attorney’s office.

The fire, which started in the two-story home around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, was knocked down within about 15 minutes. But the blaze still caused roughly $300,000 in damage to the property, according to Detective Edward Nordskog with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Arson/Explosives Detail.

Nordskog said Henderson used to own the house, but he did not discuss a possible motive behind the fire.

He also did not disclose the cause of the fire, but said Thursday it had been determined that it was the result of arson.

Henderson is next scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 15.
