In a lot of ways, Brian Zabilski is the perfect representative of a storied Saugus cross country program.

He wasn’t some polished, blue-chip runner at the youth level who went to Saugus to make the team better.

He was just a kid who went to Saugus. And then he got better — a lot better. And he did so at a rapid pace.

It’s the typical Saugus story of the nobody from nowhere, so to speak, who becomes one of the best runners in the state after spending a few years in Saugus’ machine-like system.

No wonder Zabilski fits in at Saugus, where cross Country head coach Rene Paragas nicknamed the junior “The Machine” because of his relentless approach to workouts.

Zabilski walked onto campus never having run competitively before and he may walk out as one of the school’s greatest of all time.

He’s already etched his name in the school record books by being the No. 1 runner on the first-ever Saugus boys cross country state championship team.

Zabilski finished fourth individually at the CIF State Cross Country Division II championship race in 15 minutes, 22 seconds.

It concluded a start-to-finish dominant run for the Saugus boys who have operated in the shadow of the highly successful girls team for seven years.

This year, it was about the boys. And Zabilski was the guy who led the charge.

He won all three Foothill League meets, which included a course record-breaking time of 15:13.72 at the Central Park Hill Course in the Foothill finals.

As a team, Saugus ran away with the league title.

After the race, Zabilski simply said, “We’re not done.”

Two weeks later, the junior crossed the finish line in fourth place at the CIF-Southern Section Division II finals in 14:58 at Mt. San Antonio College.

Saugus won the CIF crown easily. Zabilski still maintained his, “it’s-not-over-till-it’s-over” mentality.

He was there the year before when the Saugus boys fell just short of a state title and finished second.

Zabilski and company weren’t going to let that happen this time.

All Zabilski wanted was a state championship. Here’s one more thing. He’s The Signal’s 2013 All-Santa Clarita Valley Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year.
