The Newhall County Water District has won its sixth consecutive award for fiscal responsibility.

The water retailer recently won the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for producing a 2012-13 budget preparation that stands out against all other budgets across the country as exemplary.

Such awards handed out by the Government Finance Officers Association are rare and honor the best in America, district officials said.

General Manager Steve Cole said the budget provides ratepayers with a demonstrated degree of accountability.

“It’s about transparency,” he said in an interview. “And it’s about making sure it’s not only transparent but readable.

“It’s something we’re proud of,” he said.

The award recognizes the district’s financial responsibility to its ratepayers and marks the sixth consecutive year the district has been honored by the national association.

“It continues to be an honor to be recognized and to accept this award,” Cole said. “It is truly a collaborative effort by all employees involved, as we continue our commitment to meet the highest principles of governmental budgeting.”

The district had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for an effective budget presentation. The guidelines were designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and communications device.

The Newhall County Water District, established in 1953, is one of four water purveyors in the Santa Clarita Valley.
