AMS to help support Filmtools

AMS Fulfillment has landed a new client that fits neatly into the region’s film entertainment industry.

When the Valencia-based business set out to find new clients, the order fulfillment company took a strategic look at area’s cluster industries and connected with Filmtools.

Founded in 2000, Filmtools supplies filmmaking equipment and supplies - such as camera, grip, electric and sound pieces - to the motion picture industry.

Operating a retail store in Burbank and online business, Filmtools entered into a strategic partnership with Paladin Capital Partners LLC in October with plans to accelerate the company’s domestic and international growth plans.

The deal gives Paladin the right to a 40 percent equity position in the company.

But, as companies focus on growing the core of their business, they often turn to others with an expertise in warehouse inventory management and order fulfillment — such as AMS.

“We will be their service provider — fulfillment of products, storing and storefront,” said John Bevacca, vice president of new sales for AMS.

Over 20,000 SKU's of Filmtools product began moving into AMS warehouses last week, and the AMS will manage distribution of products for both the online and store retail efforts, Bevacca said. It will also fill the online orders from customers.

But, eventually AMS plans to work with Filmtools in setting up a storefront in Santa Clarita and concierge service to support the burgeoning film industry locally, he said.

The concierge studio would compliment productions of local film studios like Santa Clarita Studios, said Ken Wiseman, CEO and managing partner for AMS.

When a TV or film project finds itself in need of equipment, the studio will eventually be able to call for the part and AMS will deliver it, giving the “film sets and studios the white glove treatment,” said Wiseman.

It’s a prime example of merging three businesses based on the industry cluster of filming, he said.

And with Disney now cleared to build its sound stages locally, the demand for equipment should only grow.

The business of filmmaking is evolving rapidly, said Stan McClain in a statement to the media, who, with his wife Kim, founded Filmtools 13 years ago to provide filmmakers with ready access to top quality production products and equipment.

“Advancements in cinematic technologies, lighting, cameras and lenses, mounting and audio capture/reproduction are driving interest in motion pictures and performance art the world over,” McClain said. “And distribution technologies are making it easier for filmmakers to reach their audiences.

The combination is creating double digit growth in demand for the kinds of products offered by the film production community, he said.

As a result, Filmtools expansion plans center around being able to service their market, said Chuck Champion with Paladin Capital Partners.

The company also launched a grip and electric equipment rental business last year, and although the rental field is a crowded market, said Chuck Champion with Paladin, the company believes there’s opportunity in that market too.

The market is highly fragmented with the usual gaps in service quality, custom applications and product delivery; he said when his firm began consulting with Filmtools.

“Thirty years ago it was Hollywood and New York,” Champion said. “But, it’s been moving out of Burbank out to other areas like Santa Clarita and as far away as Atlanta, Louisiana and Austin and a lot of the trades are moving there as well.”

Santa Clarita Studios works together with Filmtools to satisfy its customer base, said Mike DeLorenzo, president of Santa Clarita Studios.

“This is a great addition to the film community,” said Mike DeLorenzo, president of Santa Clarita Studios. “We’re thrilled to work with AMS and Filmtools.”
