G.V. holds off Saugus

The kids were excited.

Maybe not as much as the adult.

Golden Valley Grizzlies boys basketball first-year head coach Dan Alon told anyone he could find after his team shocked Saugus 41-38 at Saugus High on Tuesday the same thing: “We’re done with the joke.”

The Grizzlies trailed by 11 points heading into the fourth quarter before a furious comeback ended in the them ending its 34-game Foothill League losing streak.

The dagger was thrust by sophomore Derek Schlossman, whose 3-pointer in the corner with five seconds left gave Golden Valley (8-11 overall, 1-4 Foothill League) the 41-38 lead — the Grizzlies’ first lead of the game.

“We tried to have an isolation for (guard) Cameron Knox, but they left me open and I poured it in,” said Schlossman whose 12 points in the game came on four 3-pointers.

Saugus (9-14, 0-5) had an opportunity to tie the game when point guard Jacob Tobon, who led all scorers with 17 points, dribbled up court and tried to launch a 3-point shot amid a chaotic scene of a trio of Golden Valley defenders from one side and a mob of Golden Valley students on the other side preparing to run on the court if Golden Valley won.

The Grizzlies won and the students ran.

“It’s lifted off our chests, our backs,” Schlossman said. “We’ve been working (together) 10 months for this. We wanted to do it for our fans, for the school, for our coach.”

This loss has to be puzzling for Saugus.

The Centurions started fast with a 14-7 first quarter lead, scoring nine points off Grizzly turnovers.

But the Centurions had a turnover frenzy of their own after that.

Saugus turned the ball over twice in the first quarter, and 19 times in the final three.

The Centurions made just 2-of-12 shots from the field in the second half and missed eight free throws in the fourth quarter.

Knox kicked the door open for the Grizzlies with back-to-back steals midway through the fourth quarter that resulted in the senior knocking down two free throws and making a layup.

Those plays closed the gap to 36-30.

Then Schlossman hit a three to make the deficit three.

The Grizzlies caught Saugus at 38-38 with 30 seconds to play when David Robins followed a missed free throw.

Saugus’ final two possession came up empty.

Keegan Alexander scored 10 points for Saugus and Knox had 13.

Golden Valley’s last Foothill win was Feb. 11, 2010 — a 76-60 victory over Hart.
